Contrallum RentalAll casesIdle kit is lost money: how to turn unused equipment into a profitable line of business.
CTR Content was a production company and post-production studio looking to reach more clients. Through growth direction and our Preciso Method, we found a larger opportunity: opening a rental house to make their large kit inventory pay during the gaps between shoots.
We took on growth direction, graphic identity and branding, web development, art direction and content production to position this new brand strategically in the audiovisual market.
CTR Content had a high-end technical inventory that spent too many days gathering dust in the studio. What it lacked was a commercial and brand structure to turn that idle stock into a steady source of revenue. The large stock of cameras, lenses and lights was an enormous opportunity cost. Anyone walking into the studio saw a first-rate technical arsenal, but outside those walls nobody knew that all of it was available to hire.
What we found:
- Underused high-end equipment
- Exclusive dependence on selling services
- Revenue dips during post-production
- Traditional rental houses that were highly elitist
- Independent creators left unserved

The business diagnosis was revealing: the company's growth did not necessarily mean overloading the team with more shoots, but intelligently monetising assets they already owned by creating a parallel business unit. Positioning for this new path ran into a polarised market. The city's rental houses aimed almost exclusively at large productions, demanding paperwork and insurance that an average creator could not take on.
In the sector, the independent photographer, filmmaker and director of photography sat in a logistical gap: they needed to hire professional, up-to-date kit, but felt intimidated and ignored by the large rentals.

The production company's growth was limited by the team's physical hours. Without a revenue stream that kept working during weeks of in-studio editing, the company's yearly financial stability was far too exposed.
